Things to do in San José, Costa Rica

La Sabana Metropolitan Park
In the heart of Costa Rica’s capital, La Sabana Metropolitan Park is San José’s most significant park and the country’s largest. The park is often flooded with people jogging or playing sports, but you can also rent a pedal boat in the park’s lake. The park is also situated next to the art museum (Museo de Arte Costarricense) and the national stadium (Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica), which was the first modern sport and event arena built in Central America.

Teatro Nacional Museum
The National Theater of Costa Rica (Teatro Nacional Museum) sits in the city’s Catedral District and hosts weekly performances of classical music, theater and dance. The building is also known for its traditional renaissance architecture. While there are performances running year-round, the main season runs from March to November.

Arenal Volcano National Park
Just under a three-hour drive from San José, the Arenal Volcano National Park is located within the larger Arenal Conservation Area. Not only does this area contain a large amount of geologic and biological diversity, but it is also home to two volcanoes, the Arenal Volcano and Chato Volcano. The Arenal Volcano is Costa Rica’s most active volcano and has had consistent lava flow since 1968.
