Getting there and around

Getting to Hawaii

  • Fly from major U.S. cities – connect to Honolulu, Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island from gateways like New York (JFK), Boston (BOS), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), and more
  • Long flight, big payoff – from the East Coast, expect 11–13 hours of travel time including layovers; Hawaii is 2–6 hours behind mainland U.S. time
  • No passport needed – U.S. travelers can fly with a REAL ID-compliant license or other TSA-approved ID
  • International travelers take note – you’ll need a valid passport and possibly a visa or ESTA, depending on your country of origin
  • One easy package – JetBlue Vacations lets you book flights, hotels, and even activities in one seamless, stress-free reservation

Transportation options

From Honolulu Airport (HNL) we recommend making your trip even easier by adding a rental car to your JetBlue Vacations package and save up to 35%. If you prefer not to drive, convenient transportation options from the airport include airport shuttles (around $16 per person), rideshare services like Uber or Lyft ($25-35), or taxis ($40-45). The public bus (TheBus, route #19 or #20) is the most economical option at about $3 per person but takes longer and has luggage restrictions.

From Kahului Airport (OGG) to Kaanapali/Lahaina area resorts, expect a 45-60 minute drive (about 30 miles) via Highway 380 to Highway 30. For Wailea/Kihei area resorts, the drive takes approximately 25-35 minutes (15-20 miles) via Highway 311. Drive times can increase significantly during rush hour (7-9am and 4-6pm). JetBlue Vacations allows your to add transportation options to your package, which can be particularly convenient after a long flight.

In Kailua, a rental car is highly recommended. Unlike Waikiki, Kailua has limited public transportation options, and many attractions are spread out. Having a car allows you to easily access Kailua's beautiful beaches, nearby hiking trails, and local establishments. It also gives you the freedom to explore other parts of Oahu at your own pace. Most accommodations in Kailua offer free parking, making a rental car even more convenient.

How are you?: Pehea 'oe? (peh-HAY-ah oh-eh)
I'm fine, thank you: Maika'i nō, mahalo (my-KAH-ee noh, mah-HAH-low)

Hawaiian etiquette to know

Accept lei offerings by bowing slightly and not removing them in front of the giver Ask permission before taking photos of cultural sites or practitioners Treat natural spaces with respect—take only photographs, leave only footprints Approach sacred sites (heiau) with respect; some may prohibit entry Avoid touching or sitting on lava rock formations or taking them home as souvenirs - this is considered disrespectful and is associated with bad luck (the "Pele's Curse" legend) When driving, practice the "shaka" wave to thank other drivers who let you merge or pass - it's a common courtesy in Hawai Respect marine life by maintaining proper distance from sea turtles, monk seals, and other wildlife (usually 10+ feet) as required by law Lower your voice when in natural areas, especially during sunrise/sunset at popular viewing spots or near cultural sites Learn about and respect the concept of "Hawaiian time" - a more relaxed approach to punctuality and scheduling that reflects island lifestyle

Local cuisine

  • Kalua Pig: Traditionally slow-roasted pork in an underground oven. Find excellent versions at luaus on all islands or specialized Hawaiian restaurants.
  • Poke: Cubes of marinated raw fish (typically ahi tuna), available at dedicated poke shops and supermarkets across all islands. Sample this in Honolulu for the greatest variety or in a Poke bowl at Kona Farmers Markets on the Big Island.
  • Plate Lunch: A filling meal of meat, two scoops of rice, and macaroni salad. L&L Hawaiian Barbecue and local plate lunch spots in Kailua offer authentic versions.
  • Laulau: Pork, chicken, or fish wrapped in taro leaves and steamed. Helena's Hawaiian Food in Honolulu serves a renowned version.
  • Poi: Purple paste made from taro root. A traditional staple available at luaus and Hawaiian restaurants.
  • Shaved Ice: A Hawaiian treat of finely shaved ice with flavored syrups. Matsumoto's on Oahu and Ululani's on Maui are famous for their versions.
  • Malasadas: Portuguese-influenced donuts without holes. Leonard's Bakery in Honolulu is legendary for these treats.
  • Kona Coffee: The volcanic soil and perfect climate of the Kona Coffee Belt produce some of the world's most sought-after beans

Traditional cuisine

Traditional Hawaiian cuisine centers around staples like taro (grown extensively in Kauai's Hanalei Valley), fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and meats often cooked in underground ovens called imu. These authentic flavors are beautifully showcased in both high-end restaurants and casual local spots throughout Honolulu, Kailua-Kona, Maui, and Kauai.

Dining costs

Dining costs vary widely across Hawaii's destinations. Budget meals (plate lunches, food trucks) typically range from $10-15 per person. Mid-range restaurants average $20-40 per person. Fine dining, especially at resorts in Maui and Honolulu, can exceed $100 per person, particularly for oceanfront dining.

Local produce

Hawaii produces exceptional coffee (particularly from Kona), macadamia nuts, tropical fruits (pineapple, papaya, mango, lilikoi), and honey. Look for farmers markets in each destination for the freshest local products.

Restaurant etiquette

Tipping follows mainland US customs (15-20%). 'Talk story' (friendly conversation) with servers and locals is welcomed and expected. Dress codes are generally relaxed except at high-end restaurants, where resort casual is typically acceptable.

Travel tips & resources
